A New Superhero Game On The Block

December 19, 2008

SINGAPORE : While other superhero movies released on the big screen this year such as “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk” had videogame releases tied to the plot, “The Dark Knight” has chosen another path.

Fans will have to settle for a plastic toy version of the Caped Crusader and his Gotham City universe in Traveller’s Tales’ latest addition to its Lego-based videogames – “Lego Batman”.

“Lego Batman” provides three original plots that involve Dynamic Duo Batman and Robin thwarting the plans of The Riddler, Penguin and Joker.

Each plot is broken into five chapters, each about 30 minutes worth of game time. Once you complete the three plots as superheroes, the game lets you replay the same story as the super villains, giving you an interesting perspective of the same storyline. All in, that’s 30 chapters packed into one game.

As superheroes, you play Batman or Robin and you can unlock additional but laughable suits as you progress in the game. They are crucial to your mission but we don’t see why Batman needs a costume change to detonate bombs or why Robin needs cymbal-like magnet shoes just to walk on metal surfaces.

Playing super villains is more fun. Clayface has brute strength, Riddler can enforce mind control, Joker can power up machines with his electronic shocker and Poison Ivy can control plants and plant the kiss of death.

What we don’t get is that as superheroes, you get to face off against the super villains in the final chapters, but when playing super villains, your ultimate nemesis is Commissioner Gordon, not the Dynamic Duo.

True to the Lego tried-and-tested formula, you will collect Lego studs and use them to purchase suit upgrades and unlock additional characters such as Nightwing, Batgirl, Alfred, Scarecrow, Manbat and Killer Moth.

There are also car chase missions where you control vehicles like Batmobile, Batwing, Batboat, Poison Ivy’s Gigantic Flytrap plant, Penguin’s Duckboat and Mr Freeze’s ice-cream van.

The online co-op feature in “Lego Star Wars” is absent here. If you want to pair up with a friend instead of relying on the sometimes unreliable artificial intelligence, you will have to get your mate to come over to your place.

Well, at least that seems like the perfect game for the Dynamic Duo to play in their bat cave.

Houdini-Based Visual Effects Studio Opens In Nanyang Polytechnic

December 8, 2008

SINGAPORE : Nanyang Polytechnic has invested over US$1 million to set up a visual effects studio.

It aims to train local talents for movie and gaming industries in the region.

What do blockbusters like The Incredible Hulk and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire have in common? Well, the visual effects in these movies were created by a software called Houdini.

And now, Nanyang Polytechnic students will be able to create stunning effects and 3D animation, using the same software in the school’s cutting-edge visual effects studio.

The software’s developer – Canadian technology company Side Effects Software Inc – is working with the polytechnic to develop local talents, to meet the industry’s growing need for visual effect specialists.

Daniel Tan, director, School of Interactive and Digital Media, Nanyang Polytechnic, elaborated: “We will be able to train more people who understand the use of this tool and the ability to develop the capabilities of using this tool, and extend it even further so that some of these movies we see on TV can be produced even in Singapore.”

Nanyang Polytechnic is the first education institution in Singapore to conduct training in Houdini software.

Under the collaboration, students and staff from the polytechnic will also undergo internships at the software developer’s local and overseas studios in Canada and the US.

Some will even get to attend an intensive Houdini boot camp in Los Angeles.

Marcus Lim, student, Nanyang Polytechnic, said: “I feel it is a great honour to go there, because it will give me a great exposure overseas. And I will also get a chance to learn new software.”

Training and upgrading programmes for industry professionals are also in the pipeline. – CNA/ms

Every Joker Has His Day

July 17, 2008

SINGAPORE : Dynamic plot – check.

Impeccable casting – check.

Thunderbolt Action – check.

2008 surely saw a slew of superhero movies hitting the big screens, with the likes of Incredible Hulk, Hellboy, Ironman and Hancock. But believe me, Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight”, a sequel of 2005’s “Batman Begins”, though yet another comic-book adaptation, stands in a league of its own and has definitely raised the bar for movies of such a genre.

More than a film about an oh-so-sexy guardian of Gotham City in his even sexier batsuit trying to save the innocent and get rid of the bad guys, the story doesn’t fall short of an ongoing psychological dilemma one faces in his pursuit of good versus evil.

Batman’s (Christian Bale) nocturnal activities are flushing out Gotham’s organised crime syndicates. Things are made worse when the newly-elected DA, Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) who plays the love interest of Bruce’s childhood sweetheart, Rachel (Maggie Gyllenhaal) decides to challenge the felons instead of accepting a bribe. Joining the axis of good is incorruptible police lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and the trio is all set to straighten things out in Gotham.

But their mission isn’t a piece of cake with the emergence of a sadistic lunatic, The Joker (Heath Ledger) who offers to become the mob’s enforcer, without any personal agenda but with just one aim – to create havoc in the city. So this means paths are crossed with Batman. And his only demand to Gotham’s guardian aka vigilante: Remove the mask and turn himself in or the people will pay the price with their lives.

Undeniable is Ledger’s stellar performance, so much so, you might find yourself secretly rooting for him to win. An instant icon, his spluttering one-liners and idiosyncrasies will either make you laugh at the wrong moments or have you cringing at others.

While one might say that Ledger’s performance is only glorified because of his recent demise, it does not take a rocket scientist to know that the Oscar buzz was not premature and is only deserved with his whirlwind performance.

In Ledger’s words, The Joker is a “psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero sympathy”. With his face smeared with greased paint, a grungy hairdo, terrifying eyes and yellow-stained teeth like a damned monster from hell, he never fails to inject anxiety and fear in his scenes. He is a ruthless villain who cares for nothing and works for nobody. His sole function is to be the devil of all mind-games – that is to push everyone to extremes causing mayhem in the city just to show Batman there are no rules to this game. All of these, Ledger produced an excellent delivery in his own twisted way.

But it is not Batman’s cape that prevents Ledger from overshadowing Bale’s performance and I dare say he gave a better one than that of “Batman Begins”. Steering away from the brooding that can make DC’s darkest hero feel like a melancholic teen, Bruce’s character is more complex as he faces more serious conflicts – how to save a city on the brink of destruction by an insane criminal mastermind, how to make the new DA (soon-to-be ‘two-face’) relief him off his duties without blowing his cover, how to gain the trust of the people with Batman look-alikes coming forth and causing a wreck in the city.

What’s interesting to note is that it doesn’t really matter if Batman captures The Joker or vice versa. But who emerges winner in getting Gotham’s soul was what really mattered. And it is this relentless pursuit of both men trying to control the minds of the populace that brings about a psychology of the things that happen – and this, along with the gripping action sequences adds punch and substance to the 152-minute movie. With so much going on and no minute wasted, Nolan has gotten noticeably better compared to “Batman Begins”, judging from the orchestrated action.

While others may deem unimportant, I cannot help but mention that the superb technical credits only propelled the movie to reach its finest quality of excellence. Hans Zimmer’s and James Newton’s score for the film trades in moods and rhythms. The most striking and fear-inducing is that for The Joker – a processed string arrangement which leaves viewers in nail-biting moments of guessing the impending dread.

“The Dark Knight” is among the most intellectually stimulating and thought-provoking comic-hero adaptations to date. A true loss to Hollywood, the promising Ledger left behind a monumental performance and has definitely raised the standards exponentially for future comic-hero antagonists.

Improved But Still Stuck In The Shadows

July 11, 2008

SINGAPORE : Only half a year has gone by and we superpower-less plebeians have already been bombarded by superheroes who have kept our childhood fantasies well satisfied till now.

“Iron Man”, which marked the big screen comeback of Robert Downey Jr was Marvel’s runaway box office hit, quickly followed by “The Incredible Hulk” who didn’t leave a huge impression after barging onto the big screen, and then most recently, we saw Will Smith as “Hancock”, the unconventional superhero with an attitude and PR problem.

Now add to the already long list of superhero movies, “Hellboy 2 – The Golden Army”, the second instalment to the adaptation of the Dark Horse comic book series, which made its theatrical debut in 2004.

Once again, armed with his oversized hardened lava fist and his posse from the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, which include his sexy love interest, the pyrokinetic Liz (Selma Blair) and mind-reading sidekick Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) aka Fish Sticks, Hellboy (Ron Pearlman) is enlisted yet again to save the world from the clutches of evil.

This time round, his nemesis is the sword-wielding, European-accented rebel, Prince Nuada (Luke Goss), who has broken an ancient truce between mankind and the realm of the fantastic.

It’s up to the cigar-smoking, kitten-loving Hellboy to ironically prevent all hell from breaking loose on earth, when the coveted pieces of a crown that controls the formidable golden mechanical army, fall into the wrong hands.

Like in many other superhero movies, the storyline is predictable from the start and I can’t help but feel that the episode being featured has been plucked out of no where, with no relation to the Hellboy saga.

Instead the storyline allows for more action-packed scenes with even more queer and fantastical creatures – from flesh eating tooth fairies to forest giants and trolls, amongst others. Some may say this is a marked improvement from the first instalment which effectively saw only three creatures make it to the big screen.

This brain child of Mexican director Guillermo del Toro should satisfy all Hellboy fans despite its similar feel to “Pan’s Labyrinth”, which del Toro also directed.

While effort was made to get the audience warmed up to the normal, ‘human’ side of the superheroes, such as when Hellboy and Abe drown their sorrows in beer and croon along to Barry Manilow, I personally found it difficult to relate to the red-skinned and larger than life, Hellboy.

I’d put my money on the more highly anticipated Batman sequel, “The Dark Knight”, which is set to open a week after “Hellboy 2”.

Pertempuran Terhebat Incredible Hulk!

June 30, 2008

Sorotan oleh Roslen Fadzil

JUDUL:  ῠThe Incredible Hulk
PENGARAH: Louis Leterrier
PELAKON: ῠ Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, William Hurt
GENRE: Aksi, ῠSci-fi, Fantasi
EDARAN: ῠ Universal Pictures (UIP)
KATEGORI: ῠ Umum [U]

Sekali Imbas

Ulasan Penuh

“Don’t make me angry. You don’t like me when I’m angry,” dialog itu cukup terkenal dalam siri TV, The Incredible Hulk lakonan Bill Bixby dan Lou Ferrigno pada era 1980-an.
